Did you know that whilst organic food has to be organic but that organic cosmetics can be a lot less than that? The law enables cosmetic manufacturers to label a product as organic even if only 1% of the ingredients is certified organic. In addition, unlike food the manufacturer doesn’t need to be certified to organic standards which means they can include all sorts of ingredients that are harsh or have health concerns. Several preservatives can be used that are banned from certified organic products.
Not many people I’ve spoken to appreciate the difference but I’m hoping to change that!
Topline Naturals is the first company to be licensed by The Soil Association, Europe’s most well-respected organic certifying body, for equine products.
Many people associate The Soil Association with organic food. And they may wonder why an organic standard should be important in equine products.
Our genuine concerns
We have genuine concerns about the over-use of toxic chemicals – for not only the health of ourselves and our animals but also the natural environment as a whole. Becoming a Soil Association licensee assures our customers of our commitment to providing products that seek to address these concerns.
Science has shown that many chemicals can be absorbed through our skin and on into our bloodstream; nicotine patches and birth control patches being the most well-known examples that take advantage of this. Products like insect repellent, detangler & after-exercise washes are normally non-rinse so remain on the skin. When washing our hair the chemicals are typically only present for a short period before being rinsed off. When we are applying these products to our horses there is a much larger surface area to cover and consequently the exposure is far greater for us as well as our animals, keeping in mind that unlike us horses are fully covered in hair. How many of us cover our hands when we are applying these chemicals? And often when rinse-off products are removed they are released directly into the environment rather than into our waste systems for treatment. Many take a long time to break down.
To comply with the Soil Association standards not only must the ingredients be certified organic, or from sustainably produced natural sources, they must also be considered safe – from both a human health and an environmental perspective – and be both fully biodegradable and certified non-GM.
We believe our products are every bit as effective as the market leading non-organic products and in some instances considerably better. We do recognise that for some people, concerns about organic integrity are not that important when it comes to selecting a product, however when there are two similar products – one made from a cocktail of manmade chemicals, unsustainable petrochemicals, additives & preservatives and the other from high quality natural, responsibly sourced, sustainable and organic ingredients that are certified as such, with no great difference in price compared to the widely used premium brands surely it can only be good for clearly nature loving consumers to have that choice?
